Toys for Local Kids
Each year the Olney Lions Club holds a toy drive to collect toys and gifts for children living in the greater Olney community and surrounding areas of Montgomery County. The toys are for those who might otherwise not receive gifts for the holidays. The club works with the generous local retailers in the area to place toy collection boxes during the holiday season from the week before Thanksgiving to just before Christmas. These kind-hearted retailers are 1) Olney Gardens Starbucks, 2) Starbucks on Georgia Avenue, 3) Fletchers, 4) Graeves, 5) One Life Fitness, 6) The Karen Rollings Team, 7) Manor at Silo Falls, 8) Ark Pre School at Oakdale Methodist, 9) St John’s Episcopal School, 10) Olney Chiropractic and 11) Dr. Alok Mathur.
The Club’s drive collects new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children ages newborn to 18 years old. We provide these toys to numerous government and non-profit organizations to distribute to families. Some of the organizations that receive toys and gifts are 1) the local Olney Elementary schools, 2) NIH Children’s ward, 3) MoCo Child Welfare services, 4) MoCo HHS Emergency Services, 5) local religious organizations, and 6) Olney Help.
Our aim is to make sure every child receives a gift to help make their holiday happy. The people who live in the greater Olney community have made this possible thanks to their incredible generosity. Thanks to the community the Olney Lions Club has been able to make this happen for the past 5 years and plans to continue for as long as possible. Each year we have collected and distributed over 1000 toys and gifts. Even COVID-19 did not deter the Club from helping to make the holidays happy for many children.
This toy drive reminds us that not everyone is as fortunate as we are and we should all do our part to help them, especially during the holidays. This is another example of the Olney Lions Club living its motto – We serve!!
